Apptronik Raids Big Tech for a Commercialization 'Dream Team'
The Austin humanoid-robotics company has tapped Waymo's former chief product officer and other Silicon Valley veterans as it readies a new robot.

Apptronik, the Austin humanoid-robotics company spun out of the University of Texas at Austin's Human Centered Robotics Lab, has assembled a wave of senior hires from some of technology's biggest names as it moves to commercialize its Apollo robot. The centerpiece is Daniel Chu, named chief product officer, who previously held the same title at Waymo and helped launch the world's first fully autonomous ride-hailing service.
Chu most recently served as chief product officer at 23andMe, a healthcare background the company has tied directly to its ambitions in assistive care and eldercare. The broader hiring push, announced in late April, drew leaders from Waymo, Boston Dynamics and Amazon, a roster Apptronik has framed as the team it needs to take robots from demonstration to deployment.
The talent influx follows a landmark fundraise. Apptronik closed a Series A that exceeded $935 million after a $520 million extension in February valued the company at roughly $5 billion, with backers including B Capital, Google, Mercedes-Benz and PEAK6. The company now employs close to 300 people and counts Mercedes-Benz, GXO Logistics and Jabil among its partners, alongside a robotics collaboration with Google DeepMind.
