UT Austin slips to No. 10 on PitchBook's list of top founder schools
The university still anchors the city's startup pipeline, with nearly 1,000 alumni founders, even as it edges down the global ranking.
AUSTIN — The University of Texas at Austin ranked No. 10 on PitchBook's latest list of the world's best universities for entrepreneurs, down from No. 8 a year earlier but still the top school in the state for producing venture-backed founders.
PitchBook's annual ranking analyzed more than 222,000 founders whose startups raised venture capital. It identified 1,002 UT Austin alumni founders across 948 startups that have collectively raised $34.7 billion. Texas A&M placed No. 79, with 317 alumni founders at 295 startups that have raised a combined $9.8 billion.
Among UT-affiliated companies, the biggest fundraisers include Tucson-based World View, Austin humanoid-robotics company Apptronik, Mountain View chipmaker Lightmatter, Austin's Function Health and San Francisco's Niantic. The University of California, Berkeley topped the overall list, followed by Stanford, Harvard, Cornell and MIT.
Why it matters
Rankings move a notch or two every year, but the underlying number is the story: a single university has seeded nearly a thousand venture-backed companies, many of them within a short drive of campus. That pipeline of founders and early employees is a big part of why capital and companies keep concentrating in Austin.
The tighter link that observers credit to UT is proximity — the campus and the local startup scene actively recruit from each other, rather than operating as separate worlds. A one-spot slip in a global ranking changes little about that dynamic, but it is a reminder that other university ecosystems are competing hard for the same founders, and that Austin's advantage is a thing to maintain, not assume.
